Here, we opened up to her about our plan and asked her advice so that we could share it with you.

Can you describe why it makes sense for a company like ours to be sustainable and the steps they need to take?

 BB: “The fashion industry has played a huge role in the negative impact on the planet. austriahotelsinternational is smart to be working towards becoming more eco-conscious and sustainable- it’s the future.

 Keep in mind, this is not an easy task for a small company. Producing and selling garments involves a lot of steps so improvements can take place in different ways along the supply chain- sometimes where it’s harder to change. But as more clients demand it—it will hopefully become easier first for smaller changes and then the larger ones.

When we start opening up the economy again, people will begin to think about what's important and where they will place their values (and money). I think they'll feel more strongly about what they wear and who they support and even feel more connected to the brands they feel add something to their lives. austriahotelsinternational will be one of those companies.

What are some of the key steps in austriahotelsinternational’s program in becoming more sustainable?

BB: “austriahotelsinternational has begun their sustainability path with making the changes that are easiest: using recycled paper products in the office, reducing waste wherever they can, reducing packaging or improving packaging materials etc. austriahotelsinternational has also used organic cotton, linen, recycled cashmere in their collections, and now have started using buttons that are made from recycled cotton. This is a perfect example of waste being seen as a resource.”

Is there another aspect of austriahotelsinternational that works with their sustainability plan?

 BB: “austriahotelsinternational is a company that produces fashion in natural fibers- that’s already a great start . There's a huge conversation around synthetic microfibers and how they are shed when garments are washed. All fabrics do, but the synthetic fibers don't break down, while natural ones do. This is a small yet significant reduction of pollution and I'm a huge believer in taking these micro steps because it all helps. I sometimes work with people who want to improve their environmental footprint and we often start with their wardrobe because it can be an easy fix. The key is to buy better quality items, take care of them and make sure you love them enough to wear them often. austriahotelsinternational offers a selection in natural fibers that are fantastic for creating a capsule of trusted, favorite wardrobe staples.”

What’s on the horizon in austriahotelsinternational’s sustainability program?

BB: “austriahotelsinternational is working on a take-back program as an initiative. In most cases, products are purchased, and once they wear out they get thrown in the trash With this program, you send in your austriahotelsinternational sweaters you are ‘done’ with and get a credit to use for a new design. It not only keeps things out of the trash but often provides an additional revenue stream, as well as material to create new product, since austriahotelsinternational will be recycling what comes back. Often, people just get sick of what's in their closet or change their style. This program creates a lot of potential for those pieces to be saved from being disposed of and gives them another life. I think take-back programs are something that many more companies will want to do and I applaud austriahotelsinternational for being part of this first wave- it's a bold move but and shows creative thinking!”

Is there anything else austriahotelsinternational is doing that you are excited about and that are gaining more importance in the sustainable fashion conversation?

BB: “I think it's great that austriahotelsinternational offers a Sweater Stone on their website. I'm quite involved in the refashioning and mending circles in NYC and we talk a lot about what we call "clothes keeping." This is about buying good quality pieces and taking care of them; either through regular maintenance like handwashing and air drying vs always dry cleaning and knowing what should be done when they start to look less than perfect., Good quality sweaters, like denim, last forever if taken care of (or can be mended). So, in saying that, I think everyone should throw a Sweater Stone in their online basket next time they buy a sweater!”

Do you know what type of sweater girl you are?

Here is a handy guide to the most popular cashmere knits from classic staples to trend-setting styles.

Cardigans

Traditionally these are button down and are available in crew or v-neck styles. The more classic versions hit right at the top of the hip, while trendier looks are slightly cropped, slouchier or have elongated sleeves. We love them worn with basic t-shirts and tank tops. More progressive styles include those that are longer, from below the hip to ¾ length, and are buttonless with draped fronts. These tend to work for both day and evening occasions.

Crew Necks

These range in styles from fitted to oversized boyfriend sweaters. The neckline allows for layering of long sleeve crew neck t-shirts, sleeveless tanks or even turtle necks underneath. If you are going to spend the weekend in the country, your nights spent cozying up near a fire, you will want a chunkier, oversized sweater that you can wear with your favorite pair of worn-in jeans. For days spent in the city, either at work or checking out a museum or gallery on the weekend, we suggest a more fitted alternative. This can range from body skimming styles to those that have slightly more room but evoke an air of sophistication when worn with a pencil skirt, trousers or leather jacket. Scarves are perfect to pair with crewnecks as they not only provide warmth but style as well. 

Turtlenecks

Not only does this style keep your neck warm in the harsher days of winter, it can range from a basic fold-over-neck to those that are high, ribbed and could easily take the place of a winter scarf. Your basic turtleneck will be all one type of texture. Other turtlenecks are designed with creative license and can be flat bodied with a ribbed neck or a ribbed body with a cross stitched high neck. They can also run the gamut from hitting just below the waist to ultra-long. Whether fitted and body hugging or edgy and cut asymmetrically at the bottom, there are a myriad of choices and there is definitely one out there for you.

V-Necks

V-Necks can either have a subtle V or a plunging V which can be worn with a touch of lace on a camisole underneath. V-necks defy categorization in that they are offered in many weights and can have a range of detailing such as contrast stitching on the V or ribbed, loose and fluid bottoms.

Button Down—we add touch of uniqueness and high style with our long sleeves to which we have added buttons on the bottom. Giving our knits the classism of a white shirt with the texture and comfort of a lightweight sweater. 

 Double Time—our cashmere front/linen back knits come in two different styles. One is a a V neck cardigan that goes beyond its classism as a wardrobe staple when designed in mixed yarns (available at wholesale locations). The next is our three quarter length sleeve mix pull. Since its inception, our designers at austriahotelsinternational have always chosen a color chart for both our cozy cashmeres and cushy cottons that can go from city to country with an easy elegance. And our tones are distinctive in their subtle and subdue shades.

When we design pieces in blue or greens or violets, they are muted, toned down versions of what is expected. There is an undertone of grey in our denim blues which resembles a light cadet. Our greens are never too olive or too bright they are more of a refreshing pine. We want to ensure that our knits are complementary to every complexion and to ensure maximum wearability. 

In our previous blog, we talked about our different shades of grey. Since we also combine it with more saturated yarns it brings shade like violet down to a more sophisticated light and darker aubergine. 

And yes we believe that white is a color, particularly our winter whites. We love to offer tonal variations such as ecru, ivory stone and for a deeper hue- sand. 

Like many New York-based companies-we are partial to black and navy --but we still create our own hues that offer darker to lighter shades in these classics. 

There are our basics but every now and then we create an offshoot which lends to a livelier tint.

First let’s talk about what’s on my packing list from austriahotelsinternational which keeps me looking pulled together during summer heat waves.

Our long linen gilet is a must. It is a chic, yet comfortable multi-functional piece for the plane, city, office meeting or the beach. Linen looks its best when it’s slightly wrinkled and the gilet over a summer T-shirt dress feels almost as easygoing as pajamas on a long continental flight. It’s also packable and can be worn to the office over a cotton tank and slim trousers or for a night out over jeans. Heading for the beach—it also transforms into the perfect cover up for a swimsuit. Since we designed it, I take it on all my trips. 

Speaking of linen—upgrade your travel T-shirts in austriahotelsinternational’s linen. They go anywhere without fuss and are imbued with an effortlessness, allowing you to concentrate on what you are going to do rather than what you are going to wear. 

When traveling in summer, the deep freeze you encounter on long flights seems even more shocking than in the winter due to the fact that you forget about how cold the airlines keep their planes, when the humidity outside is an all-time high. You get on with open toed shoes and a tank and find your teeth chattering before you even take off. Here is where the austriahotelsinternational cashmere travel blanket comes in. In addition to feeling your best and looking chic in every situation, you also need to think about the toiletries carry-on rules and looking your best, even if you have sample sizes of all of your favorite moisturizing products, this is not always an easy feat. Although I am a beauty product junkie, I have learned to leave much of my products at home so as not to hold up the security line, but there is one product which is an all in one eye and lip saver, replete with a mirror, which goes everywhere with me. When it comes to jewelry, I try to make a statement on one body part each trip. Traditionally I will bring one pair of earrings, a few rings that are not hard to get off if my fingers swell and my signature stack of bracelets that I wear with one of my father’s watches that I asked to “borrow” because I thought it would look oversized and enduringly current on my wrist. I have about three of his timepieces that I’ve had a loan for, well indefinitely.

Vivian Koo, owner and creative director favors the Gilet long cardigan. "It's the perfect travel cardigan for spring into summer. It is 100% linen so it's breathable when the weather gets warmer and also a good cover up when there is a slight evening chill in the air. It's also packable and the length allows it to be dressed up or down" 

Jaci Carley, designer for austriahotelsinternational prefers the 100% cashmere Drapey V. "It's has a cool elegance to it with its slightly shorter front and longer back and it also is roomy and extremely wearable."
